Etude experimentale de la disparition de coliformes fecaux d'un effluent urb ain en milieu marin ArchiMer
Bonnefont, J; Lelong, P; Martin, Y.
The authors studied survival of faecal coliform (decrease rate + T90) in experimental devices (closed or continuous flow systems) using various dilutions of urban sewage in sea-water. Survival appears to be high (T90 between 12 to 81 h). Dilution level of sewage and organic matter contents seems to be important to explain the decrease of faecal coliforms observed in these experiments.

Evaluation of microdiets versus live feeds on growth, survival and fatty acid composition of larval haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) ArchiMer
Blair, Tammy; Castell, Fisheries And Oceans Canada; Neil, Steven; D'Abramo, Louis; Cahu, Chantal; Harmon, Paul; Ogunmoye, Kehinde.
Until recently, it was considered impossible to feed newly hatched marine fish species with a compound diet. Substituting a compound diet for live prey was performed several weeks after hatching, depending on the species. Compound diets were well ingested at the early stage but larvae died with a gut full of food, suggesting that larvae were unable to digest the compound diet. The hypothesis was that younger larvae have insufficient digestive enzymes to thrive on compound diets, and that exogenous enzymes, provided from live prey, are necessary for early stages. The organogenesis of marine fish larvae is not completely achieved at hatching and histological studies have revealed that the anatomy of the digestive tract undergoes developmental changes over...

Evaluation of the impact of polyethylene microbeads ingestion in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae ArchiMer
Mazurais, David; Ernande, Bruno; Quazuguel, Patrick; Severe, Armelle; Huelvan, Christine; Madec, Lauriane; Mouchel, Olivier; Soudant, P.; Robbens, J.; Huvet, Arnaud; Zambonino-infante, J..
Microplastics are present in marine habitats worldwide and may be ingested by low trophic organisms such as fish larvae, with uncertain physiological consequences. The present study aims at assessing the impact of polyethylene (PE 10-45µM) microbeads ingestion in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae. Fish were fed an inert diet including 0, 104 and 105 fluorescent microbeads per gram from 7 until 43 days post-hatching (dph). Microbeads were detected in the gastrointestinal tract in all fish fed diet incorporating PE. Our data revealed an efficient elimination of PE beads from the gut since no fluorescent was observed in the larvae after 48h depuration. While the mortality rate increased significantly with the amount of microbeads scored per...

Roads and traffic are prominent components of most landscapes throughout the world, and their negative effects on the natural environment can extend for hundreds or thousands of meters beyond the road. These effects include mortality of wildlife due to collisions with vehicles, pollution of soil and air, modification of wildlife behavior in response to noise, creation of barriers to wildlife movement, and establishment of dispersal conduits for some plant and animal species. In southeast Australia, much of the remaining habitat for the squirrel glider, Petaurus norfolcensis, is located in narrow strips of Eucalyptus woodland that is adjacent to roads and streams, as well as in small patches of woodland vegetation that is farther from roads. We evaluated...

Ewe maternal behavior score to estimate lamb survival and performance during lactation Animal Sciences
Moraes, Andreia Barros de; Poli, Cesar Henrique Espírito Candal; Fischer, Vivian; Fajardo, Neuza Maria; Aita, Marta Farias; Porciuncula, Gabriela Caillava da.
Mortality of perinatal lambs and low weight at weaning cause huge liabilities to farmers. Current study describes maternal-filial behavior and evaluates the use of maternal behavior score (MBS) to estimate the behavior of ewes and lambs soon after birth, and correlate it with lamb mortality and performance during lactation. Thirty-seven Corriedale ewes were used in a completely randomized design. MBS was assessed up to 24 hours after birth, taking into consideration the distance of the ewe from the lamb at the approach of a person. Maternal behavior, placental weight, weight gain of the lambs until weaning and their survival rate were also evaluated until two hours after lambing. More than 90% of the ewes had adequate maternal behavior, with parental care,...

Fecundity, growth rate and survivorship at the interface between two contiguous genetically distinct groups of Semibalanus balanoides ArchiMer
Brind'Amour, Anik; Bourget, Edwin; Tremblay, Rejean.
On the western coast of the Atlantic, according to the literature, 2 distinct groups of Semibalanus balanoides occur with a distinct interface near the Miramichi Estuary, New Brunswick, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. On each side of this interface, the groups are characterized by clinal variations for MPI (mannose-6-phosphate isomerase) and GPI (glucose-6-phosphate isomerase). The present study was carried out to determine whether selection occurs at this interface, to establish how early in the sessile life period it occurs and to examine the selecting forces involved. Reciprocal transplant experiments of newly settled individuals to both sides of the interface were carried out. No significant differences specifically linked to source or destination were...

Genetic basis of growth, survival and their plasticity in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Ernande, Bruno; Boudry, Pierre; Heurtebise, Serge; Haure, Joel; Martin, Jean-louis.
Introduction : Growth and survival are the life-history traits of the most interest for oyster production since they determine biomass output (growth x survival). This study aimed to investigate whether there is genetic basis for growth, survival and their plasticity to know if a selection program is conceivable for these traits. Material and Methods : Nested half-sibs mating design was used to produce families of oysters: 5 males were each mated to three females producing 5 half-sibs families, each containing 3 full-sib families. At 15 months of age (May 1999), each full-sibs family was randomly split into five groups which were given different treatments. Two groups were placed in a constant environment: one with low food resources and another with high...

Growth of radiata pine families in nursery and two years after field establishment Scientia Agricola
Meza,Sergio Enrique Espinoza; Ivković,Miloš; Arce,Marco Aliro Yáñez; Díaz,Carlos Renato Magni; Moya,Rómulo Eduardo Santelices; Ariza,Antonio María Cabrera.
ABSTRACT: Pinus radiata D. Don is the most widely planted exotic species in Australia, Chile, New Zealand and Spain. In this study, growth and survival of P. radiata were compared in 30 open pollinated families grown under two contrasting watering regimes in nursery (well-watered cf. water-stress conditions) and planted on a drought-prone site with Mediterranean climate in central Chile. This study assessed phenotypic plasticity in growth and survival at nursery stage and two years after establishment in the field. Family plasticity at nursery stage was estimated by the angular phenotypic change index (APCI), while the relationship between nursery and field traits was estimated by genetic correlations (rg) and the Pearson coefficient of correlation (rxy)....

Implantation et survie de Campylobacter jejuni/coli chez la moule Mytilus edulis ArchiMer
Minet, Jacques; Sauvager, F; Cormier, M.
Illnesses due to marine bivalvia consumption are mostly associated with viruses as causative agents. In more than the half of cases, this agent remains unidentifies, nevertheless. So far as bacteria are concerned, Salmonella are found firstly. Campylobacters represent a major cause of gastrointestinal disease, with Salmonella, among humans. Whether campylobacteriosis may be acquired from shellfishes remains unclear. We undertook to comparatively appreciate the survival of Campylobacter jejuni/coli and Salmonella typhimurium in seawater and contaminated mussels. Bacterial enumerations where performes using microbial cultures and specific (with immunofluorescence) direct viable counts (of substrate responsive bacteria). During laboratory contamination...
